Happy New Year and welcome to my first newsletter of 2010. I plan to slightly increase the number of newsletters I send out during the year to five or six to enable me to keep you up to date with what is happening in both my business and the world of jewellery in general. If there is anything you would like to hear more about please let me know.
Despite a recent dip the local dollar remains at high levels against its US equivalent. With all precious metal and gemstone prices being set in US dollars, this recent strength makes it a very good time to be buying jewellery in Australia. For example you have probably read about the significant increase in the price of gold in recent months, which refers to the US$ price, but the increase in the Australian dollar price has been far less dramatic, which is a real bonus to everyone buying in Australian dollars.
Also it is worth noting indications are that, as the world's economies recover from the worst effects of the global financial crisis, commodity prices including precious metals and gemstones such as diamonds are likely to rise in price as consumer demand around the globe grows.
If you would like to talk further about how you can best benefit from the current situation please call me on 0419 484 287.
Like many kids who grew up around the harbour I have been sailing since I was a teenager, but in recent years I have become more involved in ocean racing as a member of the CYCA. Late last year I was fortunate enough to be offered the opportunity of taking part in one of the world's most challenging races, the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, which started on Boxing Day.
Sailing as one of the crew on my good friend Robin Hawthorn's Beneteau 47.7, Imagination, we finished a very creditable 9th place on handicap, and 38th overall, arriving in Hobart on 30th December in plenty of time for the New Year celebrations. It was an amazing experience and one that I would certainly consider repeating if given the opportunity in the future.
Over the last 12 months I have noticed a growing trend in husbands giving a piece of precious jewellery to their wife in recognition of the strength and longevity of their relationship. This is in addition to the more traditional eternity or anniversary ring given to mark a significant wedding anniversary.
The choice of jewellery has varied from simple, elegant diamond solitaire pendants to a coloured gemstone ring with the featured stone chosen to match the wife's favourite colour. Who said that romance was dead?
