Bill Hicks Jewellery Design Online Newsletter May 2010

Welcome to my May Online Newsletter:
Business is brisk and I seem to be busier than ever. It’s late May already! Where is the year going?

POSH Auction

In March I designed and made a pair of diamond and South Sea pearl earrings that were auctioned at POSH 2010. The event was held at the Westin Hotel on Saturday 13th March with all proceeds going to the NSW Cancer Council. It was a very enjoyable evening and I was delighted that the bidding for my jewellery, and indeed for so many of the other items available on the night was so brisk.

Trapezoid Diamonds

I recently completed a commission for a long standing client who wanted to have a ring made that incorporated a large diamond that had been in the family for a long time. I designed and produced the ring that you see here to include trapezoid cut brilliants in the shoulders, which I had specially laser cut to suit the design.

I find that trapezoid cut diamonds are a great alternative to the trillion or baguettes that are used in many pieces of jewellery. The trapezoid, sometimes called the trapeze-cut, has the advantage of a larger surface area, which adds more sparkle on the finger and it can be used with many different centre diamond shapes.

If you have a gemstone that you would like incorporated into a new piece of jewellery, or a number of pieces that you no longer wear or have inherited, which you would like made into something more contemporary, I would be very happy to have an obligation free chat with you.

Vivid Pink Diamond Sells For Record Price

A rare 5-carat vivid pink diamond fetched $11.7 million when it was sold at auction in Hong Kong recently. The South African-mined diamond, considered near perfect but not quite flawless, was set in a “cushion-cut” ring from famed jewellers Graff Diamonds. It was the highest price ever paid for any diamond at auction.

This sale dramatically demonstrates that there continues to be strong demand for coloured diamonds around the world. This is certainly reflected in my business where pink and cognac diamonds are proving to be particularly popular. Despite the recent global financial crisis and the negative impact it had on some elements of the international luxury goods market, sourcing quality coloured diamonds, at a reasonable price continues to be a challenge. However with my long-established suppliers in Australia and overseas I remain confident that I can still offer my clients excellent value for money.

Smallest Polished Diamond In The World

At the other end of the scale a diamond manufacturing company in India has recently cut and polished the world’s smallest diamond. Weighing just 0.0003 carats the stone features 57 facets and was cut by hand, even though it was hardly visible to the naked eye. It’s a truly amazing achievement.

Very small diamonds are most often used in the manufacture of watch bezels and dials and in pave and antique style jewellery.
